Detroit winter 2026-27: where to get warm (rec centers, libraries, Housing HelpLine 866-313-2520), DTE Winter Protection Plan Nov 1-Mar 31, MEAP, SER, THAW, and 211. We don't file for you.

Winter help in Detroit comes from several different places: the City for warm places to go, DTE for shutoff protection, and the State and nonprofits for help paying the bill. This guide lists each one with its official link. We don't file for you, and nobody here can enroll you. You make the call or fill out the form yourself.

Where to get warm. During extreme cold, the City of Detroit opens its recreation centers and Detroit Public Library branches as respite (warming) sites during their regular hours. In the Feb 2026 cold emergency, the list included Adams-Butzel, A.B. Ford, Butzel Family Center, Chandler Park Fieldhouse, Clemente, Coleman Young, Crowell, Farwell, Heilmann, Helen Moore, Joseph Walker Williams, Kemeny, Lasky, Northwest Activities Center, and Patton, plus every library branch. When it is dangerously cold, the City also opens overnight stand-by shelters with partners.
